πΌStroller
San Jose itself is not a primary tourist destination β most families use it as a gateway to the country's national parks and beach resorts. A carrier is more practical than a stroller for jungle trails and rural areas. The Arenal volcano region, Manuel Antonio, and the Osa Peninsula have some flat resort areas where strollers work.
π½οΈFood & Eating
Costa Rican food is mild and toddler-friendly β gallo pinto (rice and beans), plantains, fresh tropical fruit, and simple grilled chicken are universally available. Family sodas (local restaurants) are relaxed and welcoming to children.
π‘οΈSafety
Generally safe in resort areas and national parks with a guide. San Jose city centre has higher crime than rural areas β avoid walking at night and use taxis or Uber. Wildlife encounters (monkeys, snakes, insects) require supervision of young children at all times.
π₯Hospitals
Hospital CIMA San Jose and Clinica Biblica are the main private hospitals with English-speaking staff for tourists. Medical care quality drops significantly outside San Jose β having travel insurance with air evacuation cover is essential for remote areas.
